Meta Tag Creation

Meta tags are elements of code that tell a search engine what the page is about. In the early days, meta tags held a lot of weight in search engine algorithms. Today, however, this is less so primarily because they were abused in the early days with those attempting to cheat or fool the search engines.

Although the value of meta tags is diminished, it is vital, that they are still employed as part of any search engine strategy. There are three types of meta tags that should be written for every page of a website, these are as follows;

  • Title Tag – This is the most important meta tag and is used to describe the title of the page and should incorporate the most important keyword or keywords researched in the search term analysis
  • Description Tag – Using no more than 150 characters, this meta tag describes what the page is about, again incorporating identified keywords
  • Keyword Tag – The keyword meta tag should be used to incorporate all of the researched keyword phrases and include any misspellings of keywords and keyword phrases associated with this page.
